Americans have a bit of a superiority complex when it comes to grading their financial prowess. Genworth’s latest Psychology of Financial Planning research reveals that more than half (52%) of Americans gave themselves an A or B grade on their saving and investing knowledge, while giving the average American a failing grade of D. What nearly everyone (97%) can agree on, however, is the importance of financial literacy and the fact that they don’t have enough (88%). In fact, 58 percent of respondents blamed lack of financial education as a top reason why pre-retirees don’t have enough money saved for retirement. The Preeclampsia Foundation today released the Illustrated Preeclampsia Symptoms Tear Pad, a patient education tool that was developed in collaboration with health services researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Ill. The tool effectively informs pregnant women, even those with potentially poor literacy, about preeclampsia. Because preeclampsia is a disorder that can have grave consequences for a mother and her unborn baby, the goal is for the tool to offer information in a way that allows women to assimilate and retain knowledge related to preeclampsia, leading them to promptly seek medical attention should they have symptoms related to preeclampsia. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 34.6 million adults ages 18 and above do not have a high school diploma. In an effort to combat this critical issue, the Ad Council and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation joined today to launch new public service advertisements (PSAs) on behalf of their national GED Achievement campaign. This multimedia campaign is designed to provide high school dropouts the encouragement and information needed to begin the road to a GED diploma. Recent data shows that students who drop out of high school tend to earn less and have a lower quality of life. Many of them must work multiple jobs just to support their family. Moreover, as of 2009, nearly 30% of adults with household incomes at or below the federal poverty line did not have a high school credential.
