The millions of women who experience bladder leakage now have a new option to strengthen and tone away their problem instead of covering it up with pads. A recent study found that only 47% of Americans are currently taking steps to prevent bone loss1, despite considering it to be of high importance. In an effort to educate the public about the importance of bone health, Sunsweet Growers has partnered with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) to support their annual World Osteoporosis Day (WOD) campaign. WOD is globally celebrated on October 20 and serves to create awareness for bone health and the steps that can be taken to protect bones including incorporating bone-building habits – like eating prunes – into a regular lifestyle routine. Bones need the right nutrients to stay strong and healthy and research suggests that eating just 5-6 prunes (the Feel Good Fruit!) each day may help to prevent bone loss. However, many do not think about bone health until after a fracture or break occurs. Optimer Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: OPTR) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the company’s antibacterial drug DIFICID™ (fidaxomicin) tablets for the treatment of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) in adults 18 years of age and older. CDAD is a significant medical problem in hospitals and long-term care facilities, and is beginning to emerge in the community among people previously at low risk for the disease. In the largest Phase 3 clinical studies ever conducted in CDAD, DIFICID had clinical response rates at the end of treatment that were non-inferior to oral vancomycin. DIFICID was superior to vancomycin in sustaining clinical response through 25 days beyond the end of treatment. DIFICID is the only FDA-approved antibacterial drug proven to be superior to vancomycin in sustained clinical response for CDAD. Today’s U.S. healthcare providers face a three-pronged deluge of demands from patients, insurance companies, and the government. To successfully address these new and evolving expectations, members of the medical sector must leverage the capabilities of new wireless technologies – or fall behind their more savvy competitors. Frost & Sullivan recently published a whitepaper, Mobile Devices and Healthcare: What’s New, What Fits, and How Do You Decide?, which examines the strengths and drawbacks of four major mobile device types – smartphones, tablets, push-to-talk communication devices, and machine-to-machine (M2M) remote medical monitoring devices. Each device category is evaluated for application in three unique environments – the hospital, physician’s office, and the patient’s home. Criteria for selecting a mobility partner are also discussed. To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/frostsullivan/51532/

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) will commemorate its 140th anniversary today with activities at Lilly locations worldwide, including a ceremony to unveil a statue dedicated to founder Colonel Eli Lilly at global headquarters in Indianapolis. Over 14 decades, the organization has contributed more than 100 medicines and significant medical advances, such as the first commercially available insulin, manufacturing and global distribution of the Salk polio vaccine and mental health breakthroughs such as anti-depressant Prozac® (fluoxetine). Today Lilly continues to progress its most robust pipeline in history with dozens of potential new medicines in mid- to late-stage development for cancer, diabetes, autoimmune disease, pain and Alzheimer’s disease. “As Lilly celebrates 140 years, we’re keeping the vision of our founder alive – from our dedication in the lab to our impact in the community,” said John C. Lechleiter, Ph.D., Lilly chairman, president and chief executive officer, who began his career at Lilly as a chemist in 1979. “Colonel Eli Lilly started this company to put science to work fighting disease and encouraged his successors to ‘take what you find here and make it better and better.’ That vision pushes us daily to honor Colonel Lilly’s legacy and continue in our quest to discover new medicines to help make life better.” To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7809951-eli-lilly-and-company-140th-anniversary/
