Columbus businessman Scott Ressmeyer and 11 friends have started their 2013 Scott’s Ride for Miracles, a 21-day, 9,000-mile, 48-state motorcycle trek to raise awareness and money to benefit Children’s Miracle Network at The Medical Center in Columbus, Ga. The Miracle Send-Off Ceremony was held at 11:30 a.m. Friday morning, then at noon, the riders revved up their Harley engines and roared out of The Medical Center.

The Preeclampsia Foundation today released the Illustrated Preeclampsia Symptoms Tear Pad, a patient education tool that was developed in collaboration with health services researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Ill. The tool effectively informs pregnant women, even those with potentially poor literacy, about preeclampsia. Because preeclampsia is a disorder that can have grave consequences for a mother and her unborn baby, the goal is for the tool to offer information in a way that allows women to assimilate and retain knowledge related to preeclampsia, leading them to promptly seek medical attention should they have symptoms related to preeclampsia.

The number of gout patients is rising, with an estimated 8.3 million American adults diagnosed with gout—but only 10 percent of them are being properly treated, according to the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society. To heighten awareness and knowledge about gout and to lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment, the society has released two new comprehensive kits to educate patients and provide consistent information for medical professionals. The release of the Take a Stand on Gout Patient Education Kit and Medical Professional Information Kit coincides with Gout Awareness Day, an annual commemoration on May 22 to call attention to the growing incidence of gout and to enhance knowledge so as to improve patient outcomes. Diabetes experts met and determined that some self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) systems, despite meeting accuracy standards at the time of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance, fail to consistently meet accuracy standards once on the market, potentially putting patient health at risk. In a public meeting convened by the Diabetes Technology Society on May 21, 2013, in Arlington, Virginia, leading academic clinicians, clinical chemists, medical device experts, patient advocates and FDA representatives reviewed a growing body of peer-reviewed research demonstrating that the performance of some blood glucose monitors on the market may not be meeting accuracy standards.

Eisai Inc. announced today that BELVIQ (pronounced BEL-VEEK) will be available to eligible patients by prescription in the United States beginning June 11.
BELVIQ was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on June 27, 2012 to be used along with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for chronic weight management in adults who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or greater (obese), or BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater (overweight) with at least one weight-related medical condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. It is not known if BELVIQ is safe and effective when taken with other prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal weight loss products, nor is it known if BELVIQ changes your risk of heart problems or stroke, or of death due to heart problems or stroke.
