A recent survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of the newly-formed Coalition to Prevent Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Medication Misuse (CPAMM) finds that college students’ perceptions and attitudes towards the misuse, abuse and diversion of ADHD prescription stimulants are complex. The findings paint a portrait of students who recognize the risks of misuse, but understand why some students may choose to misuse, given the academic pressures in today’s college environment. CPAMM intends to use the findings to inform and develop educational campaigns to help prevent nonmedical use of ADHD prescription stimulants. The survey was conducted online between May 15 and June 11, 2014 among 2,056 US college students (full-time, 91%, part-time, 9%), defined as adults aged 18 to 24 enrolled and seeking a degree at a 4-year college or university and attending at least some in-person classes.1 To view the Multimedia News Release, go to http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7373051-cpamm-survey-reveals-college-students-adhd-prescription-stimulant-abuse-misuse-and-diversion/

Approximately one-third of teens may be missing annual checkups according to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services and the US Census. Teens often encounter social, emotional, and physical issues that may include eating disorders and obesity, substance abuse, and sexually transmitted infections. While experts agree that teens should get annual medical checkups to be screened for health risks and discuss important health-related matters, perceptions exist that may contribute to millions of teens missing out on yearly visits. To better understand perceptions about teen health, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), in collaboration with, and with support from Pfizer Inc, conducted a national survey, fielded by Harris Interactive, of more than 2,000 parents of teens, teens, and healthcare professionals. Today, a new study from P&G Beauty & Grooming and lead investigator Nancy Etcoff, PhD., Assistant Clinical Professor at Harvard University and Associate Researcher at Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry, confirms for the first time that using color cosmetics does, in fact, significantly alter how women are perceived by others, at first glance and over time. Results of the study, published on October 3, 2011 in PLoS ONE, show that makeup application specifically impacts judgments of attractiveness and character when viewed rapidly or for unlimited amounts of time. Members of IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional association and engineers from across the globe are in a pivotal role to deliver societal solutions – that make a difference; that benefit humanity. They are representative of tomorrow's Solutionist: identifying problems and solving them with technical innovations and solutions that matter. To open the dialogue on engineering’s role in bringing about innovation for a better tomorrow, IEEE created a new microsite, IEEE Solutionists (http://solutionists.ieee.org) – featuring global thought leader perspectives in engineering and technology. This site hosts a series of articles from IEEE Fellows, including Mr. Norm Augustine, Dr. Sophie Vandebroek, Dr. Vinton G. Cerf, and Dr. John Cioffi, where they offer insight on how engineers can drive technical innovation; evolve perceptions of engineers globally; show how education impacts engineering; and why it’s important for engineers to follow their dreams to change the world, among other topics. to view Multimedia News Release, go to http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/ieee/49812/
