Esurance caused a bit of a scene. The home and auto insurer staged a fender bender to encourage safe driving, an important message to address the recent series of car accidents caused by people playing mobile games while driving. The scene on Chicago’s popular Magnificent Mile featured a car’s run-in with a hot dog cart, all caused by a fictional distracted driver and Esurance mobile game-inspired creature that causes fender benders, the Fenderbendix. As visitors walked past the jarring scene, they discovered that nobody was hurt. And they learned an important message about safe driving, smart people #DontCatchAndDrive. “We’re always looking for unexpected, relatable ways to connect with people. Staging this scene allowed us to capture people’s attention and send an important message about safe driving,” said Alan Gellman, chief marketing officer at Esurance. “We understand the appeal of exciting modern technology like augmented reality gaming, but we want people to be smart about how they use it.” To view the multimedia release go to: http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7910451-esurance-don%E2%80%99t-catch-and-drive/

Subaru of America, Inc. today announced the completion of a Pet Travel Seat Pilot Study as part of its continued partnership with Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit research and consumer advocacy organization. Subaru and CPS have tested pet products most commonly used by pet parents when traveling. Phase one tested pet harnesses, phase two tested pet crates and carriers, and now, phase three has tested pet travel seats. A pet travel seat is typically used in a vehicle to hold or elevate the pet, but does not offer full containment. The Pet Travel Seat Pilot Study found that while a pet travel seat may offer distraction prevention, it will likely not offer crash protection in the event of an accident, which could lead to injury of the pet and the human vehicle passengers. The quality of commonly available pet travel seats did not provide effective protection in a crash scenario. Based on the scientific test evidence collected over the past four years, in part through its partnership with Subaru, CPS can now identify the safest travel options for most pets. For small dogs and cats, Center for Pet Safety recommends one of the 2015 Top Performing Carriers; for medium and large dogs either the 2015 Top Performing Crate - Gunner Kennels G1 Intermediate with 8' Tie Down Straps, or a Center for Pet Safety Certified Harness. In an effort to learn more about driver inattention, one of the biggest killers on WA roads, RAC created the world's first Attention Powered Car -- a car that goes when you're paying attention and slows when you're not. On the final leg of our road trip, we visited Narrogin in the Wheatbelt, which is also often dubbed by emergency services as the 'accident belt'. Here, single vehicle crashes with young drivers behind the wheel are particularly high, so we wanted to see if inattention was part of the problem. Our first driver, Shawn, took the Attention Powered Car and few mates around town. Not surprisingly, his mates proved to be a distraction, as well as thinking about his girlfriend and sadly, friends lost on the road. Next up was Speedway Driver Coby. She performed well on the open road, but had plenty inattention moments to match. Perhaps most telling though, was her insight into the minds of many drivers who even after being made aware of their limitations, aren't likely to change behaviour. Check out the video to see the Attention Powered Car on the road and how our drivers performed. Plus, follow the journey, watch all webisodes from our journey and keep up-to-date with what we have planned next by visiting forthebetter.com.au

Hands-free technologies might make it easier for motorists to text, talk on the phone, or even use Facebook while they drive, but new findings from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety show dangerous mental distractions exist even when drivers keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. The research found that as mental workload and distractions increase reaction time slows, brain function is compromised, drivers scan the road less and miss visual cues, potentially resulting in drivers not seeing items right in front of them including stop signs and pedestrians. This is the most comprehensive study of its kind to look at the mental distraction of drivers and arms AAA with evidence to appeal to the public to not use these voice-to-text features while their vehicle is in motion.
