In my last blog entry, I covered the announcement of the IBM Watson Mobile Developer Challenge. The Watson Mobile Developer Challenge is designed to catalyze mobile developers to explore the opportunity around mobile cognitive computing - bringing the power of Watson to a smartphone or other mobile device. Entrants submit proposals for mobile apps, and the finalists - to be announced at IBM Impact 2014 - will receive access to IBM Interactive Studios experts and Watson APIs in order to bring their vision to reality.

Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the global interconnection and data center company, today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Charles Meyers to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Meyers will also join Equinix’s Board of Directors. He succeeds Peter Van Camp, who has served as interim CEO since January 2018. Van Camp will resume his role as Executive Chairman of the Equinix Board of Directors.

Northwestern Medicine’s Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute is celebrating the success of its transcatheter valve program, a pioneering technology that replaces or repairs leaky heart valves without open-heart surgery. On August 25, 2016, more than 50 former transcatheter valve replacement patients and their family members celebrated the life-saving procedure that has extended both their lives and their ability to enjoy them.
The Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute hit the milestone of being the first hospital in Illinois to perform the 500th TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, since the program’s inception in 2008. Charles J. Davidson, MD, performed the 500th procedure on July 23, 2016.

BloodCenter of Wisconsin’s Diagnostic Laboratories today announced the availability of a comprehensive cancer mutation HemeOnc Panel using next generation sequencing (NGS) technology. The NGS panel developed by BloodCenter of Wisconsin is designed to detect variants in 30 genes that are either prognostic or diagnostic for 10 different myeloid hematologic malignancies.

The science of bionics helped the more than 1 million Americans with leg amputations take a giant step forward, as the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) revealed clinical applications for the world’s first thought-controlled bionic leg in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine. This innovative technology represents a significant milestone in the rapidly-growing field of bionics. Until now, only thought-controlled bionic arms were available to amputees.
