Alstom and Virgin Trains have unveiled a new look for one of the fifty-two high-speed tilting Pendolino trains serving the West Coast Main Line. The train, renamed “Alstom Pendolino” by Virgin Trains CEO Tony Collins during a ceremony at Euston station, London, now displays a specially designed Alstom branding alongside that of Virgin. This is in recognition of the successful partnership between the two companies, established in 1999, which underpins the delivery of a world class intercity service. The fleet, built and maintained by Alstom, is one of the most intensively used in the world, with 47 trains in service every day, covering over 16.5 million miles per year. The National Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest celebrated its 40th anniversary with a fan-fare of festivities in New York City today. The competition that tests just how offensive sneakers can get, culminated with the crowning of the 40th pair of most odorous soles in the nation. Ready to be judged were seven finalists, ages six to fifteen, from across the country. They gathered at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Times Square wearing the decrepit and redolent rubber-soles that won them regional recognition. Only one competitor’s sneakers were declared the stinkiest, and they belonged to 14 year old Kane Young-Hiss from Berthoud, CO. Hold your nose. This story stinks…literally! New York is used to its fair share of interesting smells, but for the first time ever, the city had the odorous honor of hosting the Annual Odor-Eaters National Rotten Sneaker Contest, a competition that tests just how offensive sneakers can get. Ready to be judged were seven finalists, ages five to fourteen, from across the nation. They gathered at Ripley's Believe It or Not! in Times Square today wearing the decrepit and redolent rubber-soles that won them regional recognition. Only one competitor's sneakers were declared the stinkiest, and they belonged to 12 year old Jordan Armstrong from White Sands Missile Range, Las Cruces, NM. Consumers who choose a 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award winner shouldn’t have trouble seeing the road on nighttime drives. Good or acceptable ratings in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s new headlight evaluations set the latest crop of qualifiers apart. Thirty-eight models earn the “plus” accolade, and 44 earn TOP SAFETY PICK. IIHS toughened the criteria for TOP SAFETY PICK+ to reflect new headlight evaluations launched in 2016. The recognition program is meant to encourage manufacturers to offer state-of-the-art protection for people in crashes, along with features that help drivers avoid crashes in the first place. In addition to good or acceptable headlights, the latter includes automatic braking technology, which has been part of the criteria since 2015. For both awards, models must earn good ratings in the Institute’s small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention with standard or optional autobrake. Headlights are factored in only for the top award.

Even the panel of “odor specialists” resisted the urge to cover their noses as pungent smells emanated from the smelliest sneakers in this year’s Annual National Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest. Ready to be judged, seven kids, ages seven to sixteen, from across the country have arrived in Montpelier today, selected as national finalists, wearing the decrepit and odorous rubber-soles that won them regional recognition. In its 37th year, the National Odor-Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest is the ultimate test of just how dirty and stinky sneakers can get when they’re part of an active kid’s life, going where they go, through puddles, mud and all. Sneakers are judged on the conditions of the sole, tongue, heel, toe, laces or velcro, eyelets/grommets, overall condition and most important ODOR, by a panel that includes NASA “Master Sniffer” George Aldrich, Chemical Specialist for NASA space missions, and Rachel Herz, Ph.D., a professor at Brown University and author of The Scent of Desire and That’s Disgusting.
