As the rate of teen prescription drug abuse continues to rise in the United States, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today joined with addiction expert Dr. Drew Pinsky,* to launch a new tool kit intended to help America’s schools educate teens and their parents about the risks and consequences of abusing prescription medication.
The Schools Get Smart, Schools Take Action Tool Kit is part of Smart Moves, Smart Choices, a national initiative of NASN and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., designed to inform parents, teens and educators about this growing problem of teen prescription drug abuse, and what they can do to combat it.

According to a National Safety Council poll released today, one in four Americans personally knows someone who has overdosed or died from an opioid overdose, knows someone who has become addicted to opioids, or has become addicted themselves. In response to the survey results – and a recommendation from the President’s Commission for Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis – the National Safety Council is launching a provocative nationwide public education campaign that literally puts a face on the opioid epidemic. The workbook addresses several concepts and starts with the prevention of relapse. The major part of the workbook is how to develop support systems for maintaining recovery that contribute to successful recovery. The text shows many elements that contribute to addiction. It goes into detail about the genetic aspects of addiction. There is also a segment of how executive functioning of the brain can get impaired with addiction that compromises judgment, impulse control, and the ability to organize. But these impairments can be temporary with practicing having good judgment and impulse control, since new neuropathways can develop with exercising these functions. The stages of recovery and change are reviewed as well as the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. One chapter is dedicated to powerlessness and unmanageability. At the end of each chapter, there are references for the reader to consult that have been used for the content of the workbook chapters.
