The pathway to better health for teenage girls starts with the first meal of the day, and when they make a “good-for-me” choice their odds of having a healthier body weight and lower cholesterol improve. These are the latest peer-reviewed findings summarized in Public Health Nutrition. This analysis of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study (NGHS) data was funded in part by the General Mills Bell Institute of Health and Nutrition. The NGHS followed the diets of 2,379 girls who, at the beginning of the study, were between the ages of nine and 10 from 1987 to 1997; 51 percent, or 1,213, were African American girls and 1,166 were Caucasian girls who lived in Berkley, CA, Cincinnati, OH and Washington, D.C.

Jeanne Holt of Mendota Heights, Minn. was selected by Aunt Nellie’s as the $2500 Grand Prize winner of the “Say Yes to Beets!” recipe contest with her Baja Bacon Beet Salad. The vivid colors and flavors in this salad are sure to awaken the senses. Holt says she developed the recipe with Mexican flavors in mind. “I love spicy foods, and the color of the beets is so striking, I thought I’d complement it with spinach and mango. Many students leave the house without eating breakfast in the morning and at noon fast food restaurants and bakeries near schools enjoy the fact that they are becoming more and more popular. In times of increasing numbers of all-day schools it is time for things to change, more and more schools are convinced of this too. School cafeterias are the logical consequence. But the implementation is not so easy. French Fries and Hot dogs or greasy burgers definitely don’t help concentration in the classroom. Sluggish and tired students are the result.
