OptiNose US Inc. today announced results of a study testing delivery of the migraine medicine sumatriptan with a novel device using OptiNose breath powered Bi-Directional™ nasal technology. In a direct comparison of drug absorption, the study found that OptiNose's sumatriptan product sent 62% more drug into the blood in the critical first 15 minutes than Imitrex® nasal spray (AUC 0-15 = 1.69 ng*hr/mL and 1.04 ng*hr/mL, respectively). The OptiNose technology achieved this improved effect despite delivering 20% less drug into the nose (16mg) than the Imitrex® liquid nasal spray (20mg). Fifty-two year-old Paul McNeel, a fire chief from Leonardtown, Maryland was 37 in 1996 when a sudden health problem caused the loss of his small intestine. Almost all of it had to be surgically removed to save his life. For 13 years after that, McNeel continued to fight fires and stayed alive by feeding himself a special liquid formula through a tube that went from a port in his chest directly to his heart and into his bloodstream. Over time that feeding process called TPN or total parenteral nutrition took a toll on his body; it was damaging his liver and he began to suffer frequent and worsening infections. McNeel needed a life-saving transplant that 13 years earlier would not have been survivable. Thanks to research into improved surgical methods, better anti-rejection medications and a better understanding of the small intestine, McNeel was able to have that transplant in May 2009 at Georgetown University Hospital under the care of Thomas Fishbein, MD, executive director of the Georgetown Transplant Institute and a specialist in small bowel transplants. Whyte & Mackay has successfully recreated the century-old whisky buried under the Antarctic ice by famous explorer Ernest Shackleton. The company’s master blender Richard Paterson spent a painstaking eight weeks marrying and blending a range of malts to get an exact replica of the 100-year-old Mackinlay’s liquid. And according to one independent expert, he has got the copy exactly right. Renowned whisky writer Dave Broom is the only other person in the world to taste both the original whisky and Whyte & Mackay’s new liquid. This design of a unique non contact chuck, was a part of a much larger scale design and engineering project of a wet processing machine for the semiconductor industry. The client requested Vertex to design, engineer and produce a scalable new chuck that can hold the wafer from the bottom end and at the same time process the same side which the wafer is held from. We had strict instructions not to have any contact with the top side of the wafer, due to sensitive semiconductor design on that side, therefore the name “Non Contact Chuck”. This unique design had to overcome and avoid collision of the wafer’s holding fingers with the process module while scanning the wafer above it. This resulted in holding fingers behaving like Millipede legs. Challenges in this design were enormous. The chuck had to spin 360 degrees, travel on the Z axis, pressurize the top side of the wafer with air to prevent any liquid from getting to the top side, as well as, pneumatically control and actuate each finger at the right time. Great project to work on, great challenge and great results.
